Fasting and exercise: timing your workouts

Pairing intermittent fasting with regular activity is a great combination for overall health, but timing can make a difference to how you feel.

Light activity while fasted

Walking, gentle cycling, yoga and mobility work tend to feel fine during a fast for most people. A morning walk before your first meal is a popular routine.

Harder sessions near your window

For intense intervals or heavy strength training, many people perform better if they train shortly before or during their eating window, then eat a protein-rich meal afterwards to support recovery.

Listen to warning signs

Dizziness, shakiness or unusual fatigue mean it's time to stop and eat. Pushing through those signals isn't worth it.

Hydration matters more

You lose fluid when you sweat, and you're not getting water from food during a fast. Drink regularly, and consider our water intake calculator to estimate a target.

Talk to a professional

If you have a medical condition, take medication or are training for a competitive event, check with a doctor or sports dietitian before combining fasting and intense training.
